Hearing loss is defined as being partly and/or totally unable to hear sound in one or both ears. According to the National Institutes of Health, National Council on Aging, approximately 12 percent of the U.S. population — or 38 million Americans — have significant hearing loss.There are a number of potential causes attributed to hearing loss, including infections, birth defects, the aging process, injuries to the head or ear, ototoxic reactions to drugs, and exposure to excessive noise.
