Since 2002, the United States has maintained the highest incarceration rate in the world. Although prison populations are increasing in various parts of the world, more than 1 percent of American adults are now behind bars; equating to 1 out of 100 American adults (which surpasses any other nation on earth). In fact, the USA holds 25 percent of the world’s prisoners.

In fact, one in every one hundred U.S. citizens is now confined in jail or prison – a majority of which are confined due to behaviors relating to drug use. But imprisonment has little effect on alcohol and drug abuse. In fact, 80% of offenders abuse drugs or alcohol and 95% of inmates return to substance abuse after imprisonment.

The United States has one of the greatest populations in the world. This is why crime is not uncommon. However, the prison system has needed to shoulder the burden that has been placed on it by the justice system. No other country places more people into the prison system than America. One percent of its population is currently in jail. This accounts for more than ten million crimes committed each year. There has to be a solution to the problem.
