Data breaches are a major cybersecurity threat, costing companies millions per breach. Ooma’s detailed collection of statistical facts shows that timing is everything when preventing and responding to data breaches.
It takes organizations around 204 days on average to detect a breach, followed by 73 days to contain it. That’s an average of 10 months of vulnerability. The hardest to contain breaches involve personal data, taking 292 days on average to resolve. Phishing attacks take around 261 days to resolve, and social engineering schemes take an average of 257 days.
These problems can be exacerbated by shadow data, which is information created outside secure frameworks. 35% of breaches include shadow data, and this can extend the breach detection time by 26.2%. This graphic shows that data is often left vulnerable for an alarming amount of time.
