Studying the social media landscape shows that generations have different platform usage patterns. Younger people enjoy embracing and exploring new platforms while more and more older people migrate to the world of social media. This analysis from Ooma reveals that platform popularity can shift among different age demographics as new platforms emerge.

It’s common for young people to seek out new platforms as more older people start joining in on social media, causing a constant cycle of new platform creation and popularity. For example, 51% of TikTok users are between 13 and 24 years old.

Meanwhile, Facebook has maintained a diverse age of users. Despite its stereotype as a platform for older users, 68% of people between 18 and 29 said they used Facebook.

Snapchat shows a big divide with 37% of users between ages 18 and 24, and just 4% of users who are 50 and older. X (once called Twitter) has its own challenges and lost 2.7 million users in two months, showing that platforms must adapt and respond to user interests.
