Throughout history, the ceremony of wedding a man to a woman has evolved from the partially barbaric, to the lavishly romantic. In fact it was not until the very recent history that a groom no longer had to keep his right hand free to hold a sword so as to fight off last minute suitors (a cautionary practice that is the forefather of the modern day tradition of having the groom stand to the left of the bride).
