The team at Pulsar illustrated the dangers posed by wildlife to crops and livestock with a chart that demonstrates key statistics describing the impact of species on crop yields and livestock herds.
Feral hogs, in particular, are a major threat to humans, livestock, and crops alike. The agricultural sector has spent $2.5 billion on swine damage and control, yet it still incurred $400 million in damage in Texas.
Feral hogs are dangerous, too. They’re strong and heavy, so if they attack humans, the results can be deadly. Feral hogs have killed 172 Americans, 55% of whom died at the scene of the attack. Twelve states have eliminated feral swine, but they remain a problem.
The statistics also show that other species, including white-tailed deer, coyotes, and bears, have caused major problems. This graphic presents a detailed look at the many ways wildlife impacts agriculture.
