Apart from dying at the age of 27, the five most well-known members of the 27 Club shared similar fates; their causes of death were attributed to either drug or alcohol abuse. Jimi Hendrix had mixed sleeping pills with alcohol, Janis Joplin overdosed on heroin, Jim Morrison likely died of a heroin overdose, Kurt Nirvana committed suicide after persistent drug abuse, and Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning.
The drug-related deaths of these five legends are worth noting, as overdose death rates continue to grow. Since 1990 alone, overdose death rates in the U.S. have increased by three times. Approximately 100 people in the U.S. die from drug overdoses every day.
While Cobain did not die directly from drugs, his drug-dependent romance with Courtney Love was surely a factor. Men with substance use disorders are 2.3 times likelier to commit suicide, while women with a substance use disorder are 6.5 times more likely to commit suicide. In all five cases, drugs or alcohol had led to behavioral changes that attributed to either suicide or an overdose.
