Most Americans are familiar with today’s top 10 biggest Fortune 500 companies, but looking at a history of most profitable companies reveals names that have faded from memory.

The team at LLCAttorney created a fascinating timeline tracking the 10 companies that earned the most revenue every year since 1955. Looking at this graphic gives us insight into historical shifts and events through the lens of big business.

In the 60’s, the top earning company was General Motors. This is a name most people know well! They’re the creators of American classic car brand, Chevrolet.

The second most profitable is recognizable too. It’s Exxon Mobil, an oil company that has gas stations all over the U.S. Other brands on the list like US Steel, Esmark, and Armour are probably not recognizable to people who weren’t alive in the 60s.
