Infographics can be a powerful way to visualize changes in our economy, as proven in this study from The Chartistry. Their graphic reveals which companies employ the biggest workforce across a variety of industries. We can learn a lot about how sectors are growing and declining based on workforce numbers.

We can see that big-box stores still dominate, despite competition from e-commerce. Walmart has the largest workforce by far, with over 2 million people, and we can see other stores, such as TJX and Home Depot, pulling in big numbers. The power of e-commerce can’t be denied, though, especially when we see Amazon employing well over a million people.

We can also see the tech industry booming, with Apple and Microsoft employing hundreds of thousands. The financial sector appears to have concentrated on a few large institutions, such as J.P. Morgan. The chart features numerous prominent food retailers and distributors, including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Tyson, and Kroger.
