Some states are a paradise for water lovers, while others are barren of water. A new chart from Staten Island Yachts shows which states abound with water and which are a little parched. They ranked each state by the percentage of land mass covered by water. Michigan was the big winner due to the many large lakes throughout the state.
As for states that lack water, it’s no surprise that our desert states are at the bottom of the list. New Mexico has the least water, with only .2% of the state covered in water. This isn’t shocking since it’s home to the Chihuahuan Desert, America’s largest. While there are many hiking opportunities in New Mexico, swimming is scant.
After New Mexico, Arizona is the driest, though it has plenty of other attractions like the Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Park. Some may be surprised that Kansas is among the driest, but this state is dominated by dry, open prairie land.
