Which U.S. cities are still affordable for young people just starting out? Rove Lab analyzed wages, rent, and job growth across 100 metros to find the top 30.
Arkansas has the most affordable metro area, with Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers standing out as a promising destination for young people, thanks in part to 20.5% wage growth over three years and major employers such as Walmart, Tyson, and J.B. Hunt. Toledo has the lowest average rent at just $949 per month, an unusually affordable figure for a U.S. city.
Surprisingly, San Jose ranks among the top 30 despite its high cost of living, with an average salary of $208,877 keeping its rent-to-income ratio at just 16.2%. Meanwhile, New Orleans stands out for its vibrant dining and nightlife scene, with 296.8 restaurants and bars per 100,000 residents—far more than any other location on the list.
