Egg allergies occur when the immune system mistakenly identifies egg proteins as harmful, triggering symptoms like hives, stomach pain, or respiratory issues. While common in young children, egg allergies can affect anyone, with reactions ranging from mild to life-threatening.
The immune system’s overreaction to proteins such as ovalbumin (in egg whites) or ovomucoid (a severe allergen) causes the release of histamines, leading to allergic symptoms. Risk factors include a family history of allergies, asthma, or eczema, as well as pre-existing conditions like atopic dermatitis.
